Is Cuddling a Sin?

Is Cuddling a Sin? (Catholic View)

With different ways of showing affection, cuddling is the most common one. Practiced by lovers, this is never excused for controversy, especially for those who are serious about their Faith. Some experience guilt because they think it is wrong. And this is exactly what we are going to talk about. In this blog post, we will answer one of the most frequently asked questions, Is Cuddling a Sin?

What is Cuddling

Cuddling means holding close in one’s arm for warmth or comfort. It is a form of intimacy, to hug or fondle. Just like kissing, it shows deep affection.

Marriage

For married couples, cuddling is not an issue at all. They are already bound by vows under the Sacrament of Marriage. They are to build their family. Thus sex is something they are allowed to do.

CCC 2360 Sexuality is ordered to the conjugal love of man and woman. In marriage, the physical intimacy of the spouses becomes a sign and pledge of spiritual communion. Marriage bonds between baptized persons are sanctified by the sacrament.

Signs of affection like cuddling are okay with them but for single couples, this is a near occasion of sin, putting oneself in jeopardy of committing a wrongful act.

Catechism

Cuddling can lead to sin if it becomes too intimate. This can result in sexual intercourse between two single individuals.

And this is what they should be cautious of.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church,

CCC 2353 Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young.

Fornication includes all types of sexual activity that are not within the bounds of marriage.

Aside from cuddling, there are also a lot of other signs of affection that could lead single couples to sin. They should also be mindful of kissing, spooning, or even intimate hugging.

Self-control is the key.

As the world is modernly changing, people undermine the value of chastity. Making out, pre-marital sex, masturbation, and promiscuity are becoming part of normal life.

Cuddling is not a Sin

Now, let’s answer the question.

Is Cuddling a Sin?

Cuddling is not a sin. However, it can lead to a sin such as fornication. Unmarried couples should be aware that this affection can result in temptation which can eventually cause them to sin.

Conclusion

As Catholics, we should have a total of ourselves to avoid the sins of the flesh. Although cuddling is not a sin, we should still be mindful of its consequences.

One reminder that keeps me focused to practice chastity is what Our Lady of Fatima told the visionary, St. Jacinta.

“The sins which cause most souls to go to hell are the sins of the flesh.”

May we do our best to be chaste. And when tempted, may we call Our Lady for help.

That we may pray daily with love and trust, especially in moments of temptation, Loving Mother pray for us.
